Out-of-favour South Africa batter Faf du Plessis heaped praises on his Royal Challengers Bangalore teammate and the former captain of the side Virat Kohli. The Proteas star also lauded Kohli’s energy and passion for the game of cricket, while answering what kind of relationship he has with the player after taking over from him as RCB captain. Kohli, who was appointed as the permanent captain of the side in 2013, stepped down from the post after the end of IPL 2021. Ahead of the next IPL season in 2022, RCB appointed du Plessis as the skipper.

“He (Virat Kohli) is a much bigger alpha than me. You don’t try and compete. The ego is the thing where peacocks generally clash, isn’t it? It’s when you like the feathers come out and you want to see like who has got the shiniest feather in the room. And for me, I think luckily, I get that about people and relationships,” said du Plessis on The Grade Cricketer’s Podcast.

“Especially from a captaincy point of view… I don’t try and outshine someone else in the dressing room. I try and build a relationship. So, with Virat, that was exactly my point of entry,” added the South African batter.

Talking further about the former RCB skipper, du Plessis said: “I played against him for so long and he is also one of the most competitive guys in the world of cricket to play against. You sit there and you go – how does this guy have so much energy? Every single time a wicket falls, like doesn’t matter if it’s a number 11 or an opening batter, his passion for celebration is like you just have to go, ‘I’ll take my hats off to you’. He’s superhuman.”

“One Of The Big Dogs…”: On Glenn Maxwell’s Mental Health Break, Australia Great Reveals RCB ‘Pressure’

Published

Delhi Capitals head coach Ricky Ponting on Tuesday showed complete empathy for a struggling Glenn Maxwell, saying the constant pressure of being a star RCB player got to him and he made the right call of taking an indefinite “mental and physical health” break from the game. For the second time in his career, Maxwell has taken a break of this nature. The Australian himself asked to be rested from the game against Sunrisers Hyderabad on Monday night following a string of low scores this season.

“For someone like Glenn in that team (RCB), he being one of the ‘Big Dogs’ along with Virat, a lot of pressure comes on couple of players playing in that team. If they don’t perform, the results tend to not follow them,” Ponting, who has seen Maxwell from close quarters, told PTI in an exclusive interaction.

RCB are currently last in the 10 team table with six defeats from seven games. “If you see what they have done in the tournament so far, pressure builds up on individual player as well. I read that article today morning that Glenn wants to step aside, just have a few games off and try and refresh,” Ponting said, adding that every individual has its own coping mechanism.

“Every individual is different right. Some guys would want to get going and push through that and get some runs on board and thus that will change their way of how they think about the game and some guys need to step back and have a break,” the legendary Aussie and three-time World Cup winner explained.

Ponting feels it becomes very important for the coach of a team to prioritize a player’s mental well-being.

“That’s why one needs to be really understanding as a coach now that anyone who is around the cricket team, their health and well-being and welfare of the players is something you think about first.” Ponting believes that for elite athletes, it is important to have their loved ones around them as they are central to their success and failure.

“With more and more cricket being played, a lot of times you are away from home when you play international sport. You are away from all the things that make you happy, that certainly is the biggest part of what we do, coaching or playing.

“I am lucky to have my family now and I have had them here for a few weeks. It makes it a bit easier for me having spent a lot of time away from my family,” Ponting added.

On Monday, Maxwell came for the press conference and revealed that he himself volunteered for a break.

“For me, personally, it was a pretty easy decision. I have been in this situation in the past where you can keep playing and get yourself deeper into a hole” Maxwell said on Monday night. PTI “I felt like I wasn’t contributing with the bat, and with the results and the position we find ourselves on the table, I think it’s a good time to give someone else an opportunity to show their wares, and hopefully, someone can make that spot their own,” he added.

“Never Seen A Commentator Bat So Well”: Kevin Pietersen’s Scintillating Remark On Dinesh Karthik

The Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) suffered their 6th defeat in 7 matches as they came up against the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), a team that is on a juggernaut run in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. Chasing the target of 288, the highest in IPL history, RCB got off to a fine start, with Virat Kohli and Faf du Plessis going all guns blazing. But, their dismissal, followed by a middle-order collapse put the Sunrisers in control before Dinesh Karthik produced a never-seen-before blitz. The veteran wicket-keeper batter scored 35-ball 83 to keep RCB’s hopes alive. Though he couldn’t take the team home, Karthik’s effort won the hearts of many on social media.

Even during the course of the match, former England captain, Kevin Pietersen, gave a scintillating comment on Karthik as he said: “Never seen a commentator bat so well.”

By the statement, Pietersen is referring to Karthik’s commentary stints over the last year or so. The wicket-keeper batter was one of the commentators on the panel of the broadcaster for a number of India’s overseas assignments. He has also worked as a pundit for many of the Indian team’s home series. But, when it comes to T20 cricket, especially in IPL, he remains one of the best finishers in the game.

After the game, RCB skipper Faf du Plessis admitted that there’s no place for his team to hide. But, he did hail the effort put in by the batting team despite chasing the highest-ever target in IPL history.

“Much better (batting performance) from us; that was a proper T20 wicket. I just tried to get close in the end, but 280 was very far. It is tough. We tried a few things; we tried different things. There is no way to hide when your confidence is low. The fast bowlers found it quite difficult out there. Similar to the batting perspective, we need to work on a few areas. We need to make sure the run rate does not go down after the powerplay,” Du Plessis said at the post-match presentation ceremony.

“The guys put up their hands and never gave up (in the run chase). It was good to see the fight. Thirty to forty runs from the bowling perspective were a bit too much. It’s important to go away and freshen your mind; it’s such a mental game. Sometimes you feel like your mind is going to explode. When you get back to the contest, you have to give your full commitment,” he added.

IPL is not just the celebration of the greatest cricketers on the planet but it is a melting pot of cultures too. Not just players from different countries, but a varied group of commentators can be seen and heard during the IPL. Nowadays, IPL is being broadcast is several languages including Gujarati, Bengali, Bhojpuri. The Bhojpuri commentary has popular actor Ravi Kishan donning a new hat. His commentary has gone viral on several occasions especially when MS Dhoni is playing.

Recently, MS Dhoni’s long-time teammate Suresh Raina revealed the CSK star’s reaction upon hearing Bhojpuri commentary. Dhoni hails from Jharkhand.

“MS Dhoni was discussing Bhojpuri commentary. He said, ‘Bahut hi gajabe commentary kar rahe Bhojpuriya me.’ (they are doing a great jop in Bhojpuri) I told him Haryanvi is also nice,” Raina revealed while speaking on Jio Cinema.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni is the “batting template” for Chennai Super Kings’ death bowling, their bowling consultant Eric Simmons has revealed, saying that strategies that succeed against him in training sessions tend to work out fine in match situations as well.

Recently, MS Dhoni slammed a four-ball 20 in IPL’s El Clasico against Mumbai Indians on Sunday. MI captain Hardik Pandy was at the receiving end of his fury. Ultimately, the 20 runs scored by CSK was crucial as the side won by 20 runs

Dhoni is the “batting template” for Chennai Super Kings’ death bowling, their bowling consultant Eric Simmons has revealed.

“They’re looking at restricting us to under 200 and then they’re suddenly facing 206 with an over like that. Every time — we live close to him — he continues to amaze us. To go out there and hit the first ball like that for six and then continue the way he does,” he said.

“But he has been batting exceptionally well in the nets…just another unbelievable MS Dhoni moment,” added the South African.

Simmons, a former India bowling coach, said Dhoni’s calmness is worth following.

“His calmness at the wicket… we use him as a batting template when we’re bowling at the death, the pre-season because he’s so good at it. If we can test out our theories against him, then we know we’re going to do well,” he said.
